This work, inspired by a Borges verse, evokes the sea as a primordial, unfathomable, and sacred force. The sand dollar skeleton, subject of the embroidery, is wrapped in linen like a consecrated host. The hexagonal box gathers driftwood, seashells, and symbolic offerings—an Andean despacho to ward off the sea’s fury and invoke its healing power.

Crusted salt on the lid, fabric threads resembling fishing nets, and shells like the eyes of an abyssal creature reinforce the bond between mystery and devotion.

Description

Created in November 2018, this hand embroidery on a linen handkerchief (20×19 cm) encircles a “dollar of sand” delicately contained in a hexagonal cardboard box (12×14×6 cm). The box is adorned and filled with seashells, driftwood, symbolic objects, and narrative fragments.

El Siempre Mar — translated in English as The Ever Sea — belongs to the Temporal Artifacts series, where each stitched fragment preserves an inner memory in a physical form. The creative process unfolds around found materials, weathered fabrics, and autobiographical echoes. Every piece is unique and unrepeatable, bearing the imprint of a singular emotional geography.

The materials are delicate and often irreplaceable: vintage medical gauze, hand-drawn tissue paper, translucent textiles, along with elements of glass, wood, and metal. Some have been recycled; others bear the traces of time. Each component is chosen for its tactile and evocative resonance and assembled to honor both its original identity and its reimagined narrative.

The piece is delivered in custom, plastic-free packaging, cushioned with natural materials. It is meant to be stored indoors, kept in dry settings, away from direct sunlight and humidity. The embroidery may be machine-washed at 40 °C using natural detergent without softener. Handle with care and limit box openings—the materials are fragile and designed to endure only if preserved with attention.
